4UMF sat down for an exclusive interview with the talented actress Demetria McKinney who is currently starring in the NAACP award-winning sitcom Tyler Perry’s House of Payne. McKinney was nominated for a Prism award for her portrayal as the drug-addicted mother turned career woman. She first worked with Perry on his stage play, “Meet the Browns” before going on to star in several other Tyler Perry plays including “Why Did I Get Married” and “Madea’s Christmas Special.”
Demetria McKinney opens up about working with the cast of House of Payne and talks about the recent fire that took place at Tyler Perry’s studios in Atlanta, her upcoming projects, one of which is expanding into the music industry.

“Being an African American woman in this field is already hard. there are limited roles and a lot of the roles you’re playing a crackhead,” McKinney says as she offers some sound advice to young aspiring actresses. “Know what you want to do before you get in it.”
McKinney is also working on an upcoming album and is currently working with singer/producer Musiq Soulchild.
“We actually have a duet and he’s done four tracks on my album,” McKinney said excitedly. The still untitled R&B album will be released towards the end of the year.
McKinney spends her free time giving back as much as possible. Her heart is close to charities and organizations that work with victims of sexual abuse and domestic violence, two issues that have affected her personally.
